Halving
The scheduled reduction in the rate of new bitcoin issuance, roughly every four years.
How it works
Each halving cuts the reward paid to miners in half, slowing new supply until issuance eventually stops at the 21 million cap.
The dates are known years in advance, which means the supply change itself is public information rather than a surprise.
