Fund domicile
The country a fund is legally based in, which determines its tax treatment for you.
How it works
Domicile decides withholding tax on the fund’s own dividends, your reporting obligations, and often whether you can buy it at all.
For non-US investors, funds domiciled in Ireland or Luxembourg frequently have better treaty treatment than US-domiciled equivalents holding identical assets.
Where it misleads people
Two ETFs tracking the same index with the same fee can deliver different net returns purely through domicile and withholding tax. It is one of the largest avoidable differences in passive investing.
