Corporate actions
Earnings announcement
Also called Results or Earnings report
A company’s scheduled publication of its financial results for a quarter or year.
How it works
Results are compared against analyst consensus, and the share reaction depends on the gap between reported figures and expectations, plus any change to guidance.
Guidance about future periods frequently moves the price more than the reported numbers do.
Where it misleads people
A company can beat expectations and fall sharply. What is priced in is not the past quarter but the future, and guidance is where the future is discussed.
